United Nations Security Council

About the Committee

The United Nations Security Council is the most powerful organ of the United Nations. It is charged with maintaining peace and security between nations. While other organs of the UN only make recommendations to member governments, the Security Council has the power to make decisions which member governments must carry out under the United Nations Charter. The decisions of the Council are known as UN Security Council Resolutions.

Topic Area A: The situation in the Middle East

It is a fact that we are living in a subversive era for the majority of the international community. Crucial issues, such as the pandemic, economic unsustainability, political radicalization and security destabilization has brought the world in a very difficult and changing situation. The Middle East is also affected by these disempowering facts. The ‘throughout the ages’ clashes of the Syrian and Libyan Civil War and the Palestinian Question are remaining in a disadvantaging stalemate, when in the same time new issues arising. The ever-expanding rising tensions between Israel and Iran in their so-called “Shadow War '', the uncertain continuation of the Vienna Talks, the Lebanese crisis, the dubious Abraham Accords and the humanitarian and security disaster of Yemen are some of the major questions regarding this area. Also, new and recalibrated alliances are rising through this uncertainty, when at the same time the influence of foreign powers is changing, giving the area of Middle East new dynamics but also new opportunities. To continue, it must be underlined that the global financial and energy crisis are decreasing the living standards of the people of Middle East when in the same time making suitable space for a new circle of regional and international terrorist acts. Last but not least, the remnants of the Covid-19 and the Climate change issues holding the area unsustainable. It is an obligation for the United Nations Security Council to further examine and elaborate on these challenges in order to achieve peace and stability.
