Sotirios Mousouris

Curriculum Vitae of Mr. Sotirios Mousouris

Born in Komotini (Greece) and raised in Athens, Dr. Sotirios Mousouris is a graduate of Law and Political and Economic Sciences (University of Athens), he has a Master in Economics (Boston University, USA) and he is a doctor of Business Administration (Harvard Business School).

He spent 15 years at the Headquarters of the United Nations, New York (1966-1981) as Economic Affairs Officer at the Centre for Development Planning, Projections and Policies, Department of Economic and Social Affairs (1966-1973), Deputy Leader of Mission to West Africa on a plan for economic integration of the Region, involving one year work in 12 African countries (1968-1969), Secretary of the Group of Eminent Persons on Multinational Corporations (1973-1975), and Assistant Director, Centre on Transnational Corporations, in charge of Research on economic and political impact of TNCs and of the negotiations and formulation of a Code of Conduct and other international arrangements for TNCs (1975-1981).

He worked at the Hellenic Industrial Development Bank (ETBA), Athens (1981-1982) as Deputy Governor and President of six corporations controlled by ETBA and as Director in the Board of the European Investment Bank (Luxemburg).

He served at the United Nations, New York (1983-1995) as Assistant Secretary General (1983-1995), Coordinator of Special Economic Assistance Programmes, Office of Special Political Questions (Head of mission for rehabilitation of Ghana etc) (1983-1984), Director of Department of Secretariat Services for Economic and Social Matters, in charge of ECOSOC and International Conferences (1984-1987), Director of the Centre against Apartheid (1987-1991), Deputy Head of the Department of Political Affairs (1992), Personal Representative of the Secretary-General for Afghanistan and Pakistan and Coordinator of Humanitarian Assistance to Afghanistan (1992-1995).

He was President and CEO of the Organization for the Construction of the New Museum of Acropolis, Athens (1995-2000).

Lecturer of economics in Universities and Colleges in the United States. Author of several articles, chapters in books on economic development, trade, human rights, international relations and current political issues. Traveled in more than 70 countries and participated actively in numerous conferences, negotiations and official visits.

Other activities – responsibilities (1995 to date) Special Envoy ad hoc of the Foreign Minister of Greece (1997-1999 and 2001-2003), Vice President of the Marangopoulos Foundation on Human Rights (1996 to date), Member of the Board of Governors of the Open University of Greece (1997-2004), Founder and President of the Greek-African Chamber of Commerce (founded in 2000 to function in 2005). Governor/Member of the Board of the Asian-Europe Foundation (1997 to date), President and founder of the Harvard Business School Club of Greece (2001 to date).
